good and (mostly) bad pizza in Knoxville
Jul. 14th, 2009 11:51 pmA few of you kind folks have asked about other pizza joints, so here is a brief rundown of our views:
Mellow Mushroom: utterly forgettable pizza. somewhat greasy. If you're going there, opt for the sandwiches instead.
Pizza Kitchen: We visited there about three years ago. I can't remember exactly why we didn't like it. I vaguely recall the pizza being thin and greasy and the service being bad.
Mancino's (Cedar Bluff): This place used to be great. Then, they got new management. The formula for the pizza changed, and they started using plastic cutlery. Now I only go there when they have a super-cheap pizza deal.
Trino's (on the strip): DO NOT GO. I don't care that they got a 100 on their health inspection. The pizza tasted like roller-rink pizza. Yuck.
Snappy Tomato: They used to have a buffet in Fountain City that wasn't too bad for a buffet. It was better than Godfather's or Pizza Hut's buffet. But it closed. There's a carry-out store down on Northshore but we've never gone there. We're only interested in eat-in places. If we're not eating in, we'll just get Papa John's.
Ci Ci's: AVOID. WORSE THAN TRINO'S. I thought people were overstating when they said the pizza tasted like cardboard, but no. All the frozen pizzas I've bought in the last few years have been better.
Roman's (by the cheap theatre): Judson likes this place. It's fresh at least, and you can buy a single slice. I guess it's better than . . .
Earth Fare: Ok, not a pizza joint, but I had some there 2 weeks ago. It was alright. I got a meat pizza and it had too many toppings. It doesn't have to be great, though, because there's more going for it: It's one of the few places in town where you can buy a single slice and they have a decent dining space that's separated from the main store.
Barley's: Arguably one of the best places in town for pizza. I don't go there often enough, so it's hard to describe why we like it. The service at lunch or in the afternoon is lamentable. If you're with a group that's drinking at night, the service will be great (it's a bar). But the pizza is good enough that I routinely forgive them for the service and keep going back.
