Jan. 30th, 2007 08:51 pmI was late to class this morning. On a day when I was giving a test. I HATE that. It wasn't my fault at all. I left my office early and went to the bus stop. As I approached the street, the campus bus passed. No problem; they come every 5 minutes. But it was almost 20 by the time the next one came. If I had been wearing my trainers, I would've walked to class after waiting 10 minutes. But it's a 20-minute walk to the Ag campus, so I still would've been pushing it. I considered walking to my car and driving there, even though I don't have a permit. I was frustrated but then I decided to cut a question from the test to give the students more time. They all seemed to finish okay.
As I walked to my second class, also on the Ag campus, I smelled the unmistakable aroma of grilled beef. This was strange for two reasons. First, it's very very cold. Who's barbecuing? Second, one expects the cattle on the Ag campus to be living. Did one of the cows from the cattle show get waylaid, trapped into a corner for lunch? Was this the prize of the winner? Were there even then live cows in the pen smelling the scent of doom in the air?
I got a lot of reading done during the tests today. I'm reading a biography of Jane Austen. This afternoon I had 2 students in my office. It turns out one of my "freshmen" is a junior. Later I worked on some annoying computer tasks, and the secretary came by with one of the candidates on his campus visit. She wanted to show him the mountains from my office. It's kind of nice sometimes when people do this (I've had theatre people and administration come in), but I didn't feel up to the challenge of being sufficiently interested in the job candidate. I wish I had left earlier.
