I have seen three movies in the past week, all new releases. That's insanely out of character for me.
Last Saturday was Beowulf. I really enjoyed this film. It takes great liberties with the poem, but I was never attached to the poem. Favorite moment: Beowulf cutting off his own arm and then grabbing the dragon's (suspiciously 3-times-too-small) heart with his bare hand.
Tuesday was Dan in Real Life. This movie was funny, charming, and it made me cry and cry. It opened up this whole well of frustrations and memories about having to pretend everything is alright and having people laugh at you in ignorance. Steve Correll was fantastic.
Then yesterday we saw The Golden Compass. They rearranged some events, added a fight scene for Lord Asrael, and combined some characters, but most of the film was faithful. The design was totally steampunk.
My favorite of the three was Dan. It held up best as a movie in terms of plot, pacing, and characterization.
