the great outdoors
May. 28th, 2008 10:06 pmLately I've been amusing myself by working in our yard. I cleared out some weeds from our front bushes, and I'm quite proud of the result. I also planted some impatiens. I'm also working on other trimming and fertilizing projects. Well, thinking about them, mostly.
Saturday after J finished mowing, he called me downstairs because he saw a raptor. I went to humor him mostly--if it was a raptor, it would probably be gone. We stood around for a while as he tried to tell me what he saw. Then I caught a large movement out of the corner of my eye, and then a bird took off and landed on a branch, where it sat for about 20 minutes. It wasn't a raptor. It was a goatsucker, a chuck-will's-widow to be precise. It's amazing to get to see one! They usually sit on the ground and blend right in. I got a fantastic view of it.
J and I went out to Sequoyah Hills last week and looked at the Osprey on the nest. I'm trying to learn the swallows, which is difficult. I think there were several northern rough-winged swallows there. I haven't seen rose-breasted grosbeaks in the yard in a week or so. The bird trips for the club are starting to take off. I wish I hadn't overslept for Saturday's trip . . . but I was sooo tired from staying up and reading Terry Pratchett, I just couldn't.
One of the nice things about Latin is that you rarely say "I." I say it far too much in English.
