No Fond Return of Love
Aug. 2nd, 2008 10:06 amI just finished my third Barbara Pym novel. I think I may stop reading them. They tend to get depressing. I hadn't realized this before, somehow. To me, Excellent Women was so witty that I didn't feel that overall it was depressing. This summer as I was teaching it, I realized that the narrator's inability to develop strong emotions arose from her depressed state. The same depression comes through No Fond Return of Love.
