We've been feeding Shelley, a tortoise-shell outdoor cat, for almost a year now. This spring, we suspected she was pregnant. When she disappeared for 2 weeks, we figured she was giving birth. When she returned she was much thinner. We kept waiting for her to bring her kittens around, but she never did. And she spent a lot of time at our house. So we figured the kittens hadn't made it.

Mais non! Yesterday morning when I looked out back, I saw 2 golden tabby kittens! When J came downstairs, I saw their mommy close by. One of the gold cats is long-hair ("Fuzzy") and the other is a short-hair ("Curly"). After we fed them all, I caught a glimpse of a third kitten, a gray short-hair tabby that looks like another cat we feed. Since we call its dad Jones Very, we're calling the gray kitten "mini-Jones."

The kittens are about 3 months old, but strangely they're not weaned. They do eat the hard food we put out, but today we also watched all of them nurse on Shelley. J posits that Shelley has milk because she's pregnant again. (We really need to catch and spay this cat.)

We're very excited about the kittens and hopeful about the prospect of adopting one or more. Shiloh has been gone almost 2 weeks. (Someone out there owes me $20, btw.) Dolores has been much more relaxed without that bundle of energy disrupting her life. Obviously we aren't going to rush into introducing another kitten to her.
