Somali pirates have captured Capt. Richard Phillips and are using him as a hostage. Why is it taking so long to resolve this? I keep picturing a bunch of bureaucrats bungling about rules and procedures as the pirates sail away. My other head image is all those 80s military rescue movies, where it seems like one determined person can get the job done. It astonishes me that the standoff has lasted 3 days now.
I have a couple of ideas. First, get some divers to come under the boat, poke a hole in it so it slowly sinks. The men would be swimming in the ocean and the Navy comes and picks them all up. Another idea, more expensive but similar, is to put a sub under it and then resurface the sub. (Lots of fun head-imagery there.) Another idea is to throw a big pile of shit at them. Or bees. Anything to make them want to abandon the boat. This to me is the easiest way to resolve the situation. You're on a rescue boat already, which at most holds 20 people and few supplies. Everyone leaving the boat means that the pirates can no longer threaten Phillips. Of course Phillips would also be at risk, but considering that yesterday he jumped out of the boat, I think it's a risk he's willing to take.
