kitten progress
Aug. 20th, 2009 11:08 amWe've made a lot of progress in the past couple of weeks, thanks largely to J's efforts.
Trying to catch them didn't work. So, our next plan was luring them. Shelley brought the kits to our terrace (in the backyard, down the hill from our house), so when she was there with the kittens, we fed her canned food on the terrace. J braved the millions of mosquitos to stay down there with them, being very still but talking softly so that they got used to humans. I watched with binoculars from the cool safety of an upstairs window. A few days ago, J managed to actually touch them. I thought that was a red-letter day, but the real red-letter day was the day before yesterday. I got up early and went downstairs, and the kittens were at the back door! I was so excited that I woke J up early. I scared them a little opening the door to give them food, but they were happy. Their mom ate dry food and left the canned food for them. Today was the 3rd day that they've been at the back door. Yesterday, I petted the tortoise-shell kitten, whom we're calling Calliope. The gold one was very skittish. Today, the kitts explored inside a bit when J left the door open. Calliope wandered into the shadows and disappeared. J got to pet the gold one some more, but he didn't explore any. Very exciting! We could now abduct them easily, but it seems so cruel that we're sort of waiting until they're less attached to their mom. Calliope still won't eat the dry food.
