Sherlock Holmes film
Dec. 30th, 2009 03:44 pmI confess I'm not a diehard Holmes fan. I haven't read every single story, I don't memorize details about the stories, and I don't track inconsistencies between them or try to find real-life correspondences. However, I'm a Victorianist and I do know a little about Arthur Conan Doyle and his works. Overall, the film was enjoyable but disappointing in subtle ways.
( Small spoilers )
I haven't said anything yet about the plot. Let's just say I found it strange and leave it at that. It isn't based on any of the stories. Overall, my disappointment was not about the characters or the story but about the portrayal of London. London was simply not believable. It all looked like either a set or a modern street. London should have been more of a character and should have been treated more lovingly.
