Having fun

The lesson from this last weekend is that having fun is exhausting. Alternatively, it's that it's easier to be happy when I'm doing things and easier to do things when I'm happy. I was happy and energized most of the weekend, but it wore me out, too.

This last weekend my husband and I took a holiday in Chattanooga to celebrate his birthday. We left Saturday around noon and arrived at Rock City around 2:00. We ate lunch at the grill in the park, then spent the next 4 hours walking and enjoying the views. It took some effort to absorb all the details--it would have been easier to rush through the park without seeing things. By the time we got to Fairyland Caverns at the end, I think our patience was worn somewhat.

We went to the Terminal Brewhouse downtown for dinner. It was our second time eating there. Last time I had a black bean burger, which was nothing special. This time I had the pizza, which was very nice. My husband enjoys their philosopher burger, which is made with lamb and all sorts of extra.

While we waited for our table, we checked in to our hotel next door at the Chattanooga Choo Choo. I really enjoyed staying there. The room itself was nothing particularly special. The king-mattress could have been more comfortable, but the water pressure was nice. Instead, the joy of the Choo Choo is, well, the choo choo. You can climb on the train. There is a beautiful formal garden. The architecture is impressive. They even have sleeper cars (beyond our budget), actual cars made into hotel rooms.

Saturday night we visited McKay Used Books and I found 2 books to help plan our next trip to Great Britain. Sunday morning, we had breakfast in the hotel then explored and rested a while. At lunch time we took the free city shuttle up to the aquarium. We had my favorite meal of the trip at Taziki Meditteranean Cafe. I had wanted Mediterranean food, and there it was! Then we went into the Ocean part of the Aquarium, catching the dive show before running off to the Imax movie at 3. We saw The Last Reef. I enjoyed it pretty well, but if I had realized it was 3D I wouldn't have gone. We went back to the Ocean exhibit to finish looking around. My favorites in that exhibit were actually the birds, like the Macaws in the rainforest room. I also very much enjoyed the penguins. Around 5:00 we made it into the River part of the aquarium, where again I enjoyed the birds like the Wood Ducks and Catbird. I also got to pet a sturgeon. At 6:30 we dragged ourselves across the street to a Mexican restaurant, where it was good to rest. They had great salsa. Then we slowly limped to the shuttle, rode back to the car, and drove home.
