Yesterday was my 35th birthday. I've been a little down all week, but I don't think it's because I'm getting older, not exactly. I have a theory about time, that's it's primarily an external measurement. In memory, our lives are one unity. Do I feel older? Certainly not. I'm me. I change and I have more experience, but I don't measure it in years. I do notice though that I judge people and events by external measures of time. I think of someone being 35 and expect certain things, certain accomplishments, being settled in a job and homelife. I'm still unsettled in my job, but my homelife is coming along quite better than expected. I would probably feel much worse about turning 35 if I weren't engaged.

So as I said, I had been feeling down all week. Part was just not eating healthy, too, I'm sure. When my birthday came, it was really hard to get excited. I think I was prepared for a BAD birthday. But the day kept insisting on being good. I got to open gifts when I got up that morning. They had come in the mail and J had kept them from me. On the walk from my car to my office, I had a new thick carpet of golden leaves. They had all fallen overnight. Teaching went very well. I felt sure of my material. J picked me up right after class and took me to lunch. The food wasn't as good as I had hoped, but I enjoyed the ambience and getting out and trying something different. I went back to the office for the afternoon, accomplishing little. I came home and took a brief nap. J was on the futon, I was on the couch, and my cat was above me. We went to the furniture store, where J bought my birthday gift: a bookshelf for our paperbacks. (He also got me a new book (too big for said bookshelf) and 2 CDs.) We went to Market Square and ice-skated for about 20 minutes, then had a lovely dinner in the Tomato Head. We came home and watched 2 episodes of Wallace and Gromit, which I received for my birthday. All in all, an excellent day.

I got a LOT of gifts, it seems. In addition to J's presents, I received two turtlenecks, a new DVD/VHS player, 2 books, Yahtzee, a birdsong CD set, and an Amazon gift certificate. No wonder I like my birthday better than Christmas!
