class today
Apr. 18th, 2007 11:36 amI had some happy moments in my composition workshop today. I eavesdropped on several groups and they were giving good comments. One of them mentioned the exigence. I was so proud. I feel like they've really learned. (Of course, if past experience is anything to go by, the evaluations will be low.)
I received this quote from dailydharma and I thought it applied to teaching in general. Some of my students are marshes and some are gardens. I've been lucky to have lots of gardens this term:
Waking up is unpleasant, you know. You are nice and comfortable in bed. It's irritating to be woken up. That's the reason the wise guru will not attempt to wake people up. I hope I'm going to be wise here and make no attempt whatsoever to wake you up if you are asleep. It is really none of my business, even though I say to you at times, "Wake up!" My business is to do my thing, to dance my dance. If you profit from it, fine; if you don't, too bad! As the Arabs say, "The nature of rain is the same, but it makes thorns grow in the marshes and flowers in the gardens."
-Anthony de Mello, SJ
Oh, in other news, J found my cellphone that I lost last fall. It was in the mud beside the carport. We're still waiting for it to dry to see if it's salvageable.
