movie week

Since I quit my Latin class, I've been exposing myself to a great deal of visual media. Far too much for my taste, in truth, and yet it's hard to pull away. This afternoon I saw The Incredible Hulk. I had strong reservations going into it--I even brought a book. But the movie surprised me. It's very entertaining and I was never bored. It wasn't nearly as good as Iron Man (which rocked), but it was worthy. Earlier this week I saw Sex and the City, which I liked so much that I went out and rented the first season. I particularly liked Carrie's new closet (which brought tears to my eyes) and the many instances of female community.

I've been thinking a lot about community lately. I watched a special on the Discovery channel about the successful launch and landing of Phoenix on Mars. The teams were overjoyed with their success and they were hugging each other and climbing over furniture. What a wonderful sensation that must be, to be part of a joint effort, to have put so much work and hope into it, and then to share in the glow of your success. I envy that. I felt something similar as I've been watching photos of the sandbagging in Iowa City. I'm very glad not to be there, and yet part of me wonders how I would respond. Part of me yearns to be called on to do something great and to help people. In truth, I'm fairly useless physically, so I doubt I would get to share in that way. Sending money to Red Cross etc just isn't the same.

The flooding in Iowa is just unbelievable. And the ramifications will be longterm for all of us. That state produces more corn than any other, you know, as well as lots of chickens and pigs and soybeans. And you thought food was already high?
