Our subdivision put out some American flags at the entrance and it made me uncomfortable. I suppose it's just patriotism and preparation for the holiday, but too often flags are put out to display American chauvinism.
A chauvinist is not necessarily a sexist. People tend to conflate chauvinism with the more limited term of male chauvinism, which is extreme partiality toward men as being far superior to women. One can likewise be a female chauvinist, a Christian chauvinist, a soccer chauvinist, and so on.
The story of my summer is written on my skin. Poison ivy from gardening, mosquito bites and a little suntan from birdwatching, and most recently paint from the deck.
