It's been a busy bird-week. Saturday I went on a field trip to Chota Waterfowl Refuge, about a 90-minute drive. I saw my first Spotted Sandpiper--I wish we had been able to get him into the scope. We heard Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Yellow-breasted Chat, but they didn't come out. I've only seen the Cuckoo once, and I've only ever heard the Chat. At sunset the Chuck-will's-widows began to call loudly. I think there were four at once. One of them did a flyby. We also heard a Screech Owl. I keep debating about whether I should include owls on my list when I only hear them. I think I'm going to wait to count them until I see them. Still, I loved hearing it. I think it's only the 2nd time I've heard it in the wild.

Yesterday we had some excitement in our yard. I watched a male Am. Robin land in the grass in the front yard, and then I saw there was a small bird near it, perhaps a Starling. Then the Robin fed it! I grabbed by binos and saw that it was a baby Robin that still had some downy feathers. Judson and I went out to see if we could see the nest it came from, but no avail. I can't catch it to put it anywhere safe because it hops away. It cant fly yet. I really don't think it will survive, considering how many feral cats we have in the area. It's so sad to think about the daddy feeding it all day, to no purpose really. I haven't seen the baby yet today, but I haven't been out in the yard. I'm afraid to look, in truth.

Yesterday we also had first of season Ruby-throated Hummingbird in the yard. I was so surprised! I put up the feeder about a month ago, nothing came as usual, so I sort of forgot about it. (We usually don't see them until fall migration.) Every so often I said to myself, I should clean that feeder and put out some fresh sugar-water. Yesterday afternoon around 3 I was sitting on the deck reading while Judson worked in the yard. And a hummer came to the feeder! And it was a male! Of course after that I put out fresh sugar water.

This morning I woke up hearing an Eastern Wood-Pewee. I was able to locate it from the back deck. That's a new one for the yard. Some mornings I hear Wood Thrushes, but I haven't been able to locate them.

In 9 days I'm going on a trip to Michigan to see Kirtland's Warbler. I wish I wasn't going--I have too much work to do! Writing is going terribly. (There's too much new writing instead of editing I have to do.)
